See & Do in Sumner, Christchurch
Sumner is surrounded on one side by the Port Hills, with many cliff top and rugged hill tracks giving spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, the Canterbury Plains and further to the Southern Alps – ideal for those who love to run, walk or mountain bike. On the other side of the village are Sumner and Scarborough beaches, with safe swimming and excellent surf.
Take time out at one of the local café/bars –enjoy a glass of wine, or browse through the clothing boutiques, art galleries or gift shops, or wander down to the Scarborough Café and enjoy lunch and a coffee. Explore Cave Rock, climb to the top and see beautiful views of Sumner Beach. At low tide you can walk through the rock and explore the small caves.
Head over the hill to Lyttelton and take a cruise on the harbour or jump onboard a “black cat” and see our Hector’s Dolphins. Or drive along the Summit road above Sumner and look down over the city. Christchurch Gondola is a 10 minute drive from Sumner, and takes you 500m above the city for 360⁰ views from Mt. Cavendish over Pegasus Bay, Banks Peninsular and the Canterbury Plains. If you are a skier, we are only one hour away from ski-fields.
Be adventurous and try paragliding from the “Port Hills” with “Nimbus Paragliding”.
The Sumner bus takes you straight into Christchurch City, where you can shop, or take a stroll through the Botanical Gardens, browse through Christchurch’s impressive Art Gallery, or take a punt down the Avon River. When you return to Sumner, enjoy dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants.
